Bassett served as a volunteer officer in the United States Subsistence Dept. for the Sub-District of Appomattox, Va., and as Chief Commissioner of Subsistence for the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands in Charleston, S.C. Bassett received a commission as a captain on Mar. 11, 1865 in the Commissary of Subsistence of Volunteers in Washington.
