George T. Bassett served as a volunteer officer in the United States Subsistence Dept. for the Sub-District of Appomattox, Va., and as Chief Commissioner of Subsistence for the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands in Charleston, S.C. Bassett received a commission as a captain on Mar. 11, 1865 in the Commissary of Subsistence of Volunteers in Washington. He was assigned the following month to manage the commissary stores in Petersburg and Amelia, Va., from July to Nov. of 1865. In December of 1865, he was transferred to Charleston where he served as Chief Commissioner until June of 1866. His general assignment was to distribute government rations to Federal troops and destitute citizens affected by the American Civil War.
