Chiefly correspondence and newspaper clippings re phosphate industry and railroads in S.C. during Civil War and Reconstruction eras, and the iron industry in the South after the Civil War. Unbound items inlude letter, 25 Dec. 1864, Augusta, Ga., to John M. Otey, Charleston, S.C., re his belief that iron could be stripped from railroads in S.C. without serious damage; letter, 1 Jan. 1865, Augusta, Ga., to P.G.T. Beauregard, re repairs to railroad. Letters, 5 May and 18 June 1870, Yale College, New Haven, Conn., Othniel Charles Marsh, to Willis, re a collection of fossils sent by Willis to the Yale Museum and sending a photo of a mastodon; letter, 26 June 1891, Washington, D.C., David T. Day, to Willis, re collection of statistics on phosphate rock production; and printed articles, 1875, written and collected by Willis, re the iron industry in the South since the Civil War, with a list of furnaces in operation. Srapbook, 1843-1877, Charleston, S.C., containing chiefly pamplets and newspaper clippings on the phosphate industry in S.C., including broadsides, cartoons, manuscript notes and charts on chemical analysis or various phosphate deposits, railroad and steamship shipments and list of stockholders of the Marine and River Mining and Manufacturing Company. Scrapbook includes several pamphlets re phosphate mining, a published geological report and an agricultural report on S.C., as well as two larger items tipped in: undated broadside: "Death to the monopoly of all phosphate grabbers! Colored men come to the rescue!! Petitions can be signed at different places in the City"; and a drawing "What does C.S.G. want? ... Which is right? to steal Phosphates or to pay for them?" re controversy over a bill to require payment of mineral rights for phosphate mining, "Down with men who talk of paying the State for her Phosphates. Pass that Bill and our stealing ceases. Where are the colored Laborers? Where is Morphine Thomas?..." [signed by A.B. Thomas of 55 Chatham St., New York]
