James M. Smith letter to Prof. John W. C. Davis [manuscript], 1875 September 17.

Smith comments on the appointment of William M. Thornton as adjunct professor of mathematics at the University of Virginia, which he attributes to the machinations of Charles Venable. He mentions the claims of the Methodist Church and candidacies of other mathematicans. A clipping regarding Thornton's election is included.
