William Alphonso Murrill (1869-1957) was a mycologist, taxonomist and writer. His specialty was the Basidiomycetes. In 1904 he joined the New York Botanical Garden as an Assistant Curator, succeeding Franklin S. Earle as staff mycologist. He was Assistant Director from 1909-1919 and Curator and Supervisor of Public Instruction from 1919 to 1924. Murrill founded and edited the journal "Mycologia". Between 1924 and 1940 Murrill withdrew from his studies. He was discovered by George Weber in 1940. ...

Elmer Drew Merrill was born in East Auburn, Maine in 1876 and died in 1956. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Maine in 1898 and his master's in 1904. In 1902 he went to the Philippines where he remained for 21 years as professor of botany at the University of the Philippines and director of the Bureau of Science at Manila.
