Murrill, William A., 1869-1957
Variant namesWilliam Alphonso Murrill (1869-1957) was a mycologist, taxonomist and writer. His specialty was the Basidiomycetes. In 1904 he joined the New York Botanical Garden as an Assistant Curator, succeeding Franklin S. Earle as staff mycologist. He was Assistant Director from 1909-1919 and Curator and Supervisor of Public Instruction from 1919 to 1924. Murrill founded and edited the journal "Mycologia". Between 1924 and 1940 Murrill withdrew from his studies. He was discovered by George Weber in 1940. Weber established a connection for Murrill at the University of Florida, Gainesville where he resumed his studies. He was born on Oct. 13, 1869 near Lynchburg, Va. He attended Virginia A & M College, Randolph Macon College and gained his Ph. D. from Cornell University in 1897. He died in Gainesville, FL in 1957.
