Michael Smuin family papers, 1954-2003.

The Michael Smuin family papers document the life and career of Michael Smuin from 1933 through 2000. The collection includes personal correspondence, publicity and business operations of the San Francisco Ballet and the Smuin Ballets/SF, performance programs for the San Francisco Ballet, the American Ballet Thetre, and Smuin Ballets/SF including souvenir programs for both the San Francisco Ballet and the American Ballet Theatre, and a scrapbook from Smuin's early years with the San Francisco Ballet. Photographs of family members, Smuin in ballet costumes, as well as other professional dancers are included. A large section of the collection is dedicated to newspaper clippings reviewing Smuin's dancing and choreography as well as magazine articles interviewing Smuin himself. In addition to the materials relating directly to Michael Smuin, the collection also contains photographs, correspondence, business relations, newspaper clippings and programs for Smuin family's: his wife Paula Tracy, his son Shane Smuin, his parents Shirley and Harold (Bud) Smuin, and his brothers Doug and Stephen Smuin.

Smuin was a member of the San Francisco Ballet. He joined the American Ballet Theatre where he not only danced but began to choreograph for the company. Smuin returned to the San Francisco Ballet to become Co-Artistic Director with Lew Christensen. He was forced to resign from the San Francisco Ballet.
