The Moravian Church in America settled a community in Northampton County, Pennsylvania between 1741 and 1745. Later, during the winter of 1755-56, this Nazareth community sheltered many fugitive settlers fleeing the Indian invasion of upper Northampton County. The Moravians came to the United States in 1735 primarily to preach the gospel to the Indians. Although the Moravians had contacts with many Indian tribes, they did most of their work among the Delawares. They followed this tribe westward from Pennsylvania to Ohio, to Canada, to Indiana,and finally to Kansas.
