Christian T. Pedersen was born in Norway. In 1894, he left for a bowhead whaling voyage. Thereafter, he worked as a ship's storekeeper, boatsteerer, and harpooner. He later commanded a number of whaling or trading ships in Arctic waters. He was involved in coastal Alaskan and Arctic trading, especially fur trading (1923-1936).
