William Aloysius Keleher was born November 7, 1886 in Lawrence, Kansas to David Keleher and Mary Ann (Gorry) Keleher. Three years later, the family moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where William enrolled at St. Mary's Parochial School. He studied there until 1900 when he began work as a messenger for the Western Union Telegraph Company. Although he started as a counter clerk, he quickly moved up to telegraph operator.
