Gertrude Clarke Whittall Collection/Mendelssohn Collection 1811-1944 (bulk 1820-1847, 1885-1913).

The Mendelssohn Collection is a subset of the Gertrude Clarke Whittall Foundation Collection, which includes not only the five Stradavari instruments given to the Library by Mrs. Whittall, but also a rich collection of autograph manuscripts by major European composers. The Mendelssohn Collection consists chiefly of music manuscripts and letters of Mendelssohn and other members of the Mendelssohn family, libretti, programs, iconography and other papers dating from the 19th century as well as research materials concerning Mendelssohn assembled by William Freemantle in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
