This collection contains the papers of the Thwaits family of Lexington, Kentucky. The majority of the collection relates to James H. Thwaits and his younger brother, Walter L. Thwaits. In the collection are letters from United States Representatives A. Gallatin Talbott, John W. Stevenson, and James B. Clay, and Vice-President John C. Breckinridge. There are eight letters from Talbott regarding political events and Talbott's unsuccessful attempt to secure the Democratic party's nomination as the candidate for governor in 1859. The diary of James Thwaits provides an account of his travels and the people he meets, including President James Buchanan on May 1, 1857. The entry for February 3, 1857, reveals that Thwaits saw Edwin Booth perform Hamlet at a Cincinnati theater. Thwaits' diary also contains his will, dated October 6, 1859, when he knew that he was dying of consumption (tuberculosis). The collection also contains a publication entitled "The Thirtieth Annual Catalog of the Officers and Students of Centre College," a satirical and amusing description of the faculty, students, and college life in 1854; business papers (mostly tax receipts and property deeds); funeral announcements; and genealogical information about the Thwaits family.

John Cabell Breckinridge (January 16, 1821 – May 17, 1875) was an American lawyer, politician, and soldier. He represented Kentucky in both houses of Congress and became the 14th and youngest-ever vice president of the United States, serving from 1857 to 1861. Both James H. Thwaits (1834-1860), and his younger brother, Walter L. Thwaits (d. 1862) were educated at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. Much of the correspondence from Walter describes his activities while at Centre. James was a newspaper editor (newspaper titles unknown) in Bowling Green and Lexington, and he also worked for the LOUISVILLE COURIER.
