William B. Ballou papers, 1898-1918.

The William B. Ballou Papers are mainly handwritten letters to his brother describing his travels from Vermont to San Francisco, Saint Michaels, Alaska (by schooner) and up the Yukon River to Rampart City where he began his search for gold. Through the following years (to 1918) he continues his correspondence describing the life of mining and business in the Far North. This collection also contains mining claim maps, a manuscript, and photographs.

William B. Ballou was born in Winter Hill, Vermont. He arrived traveled to Alaska from San Francisco by schooner, disembarking at Rampart City to search in 1907. Ballou was apparently a part time accountant and he wrote "Jack - a true story of adventure in Alaska." He married and had a son. From the description of William B. Ballou papers, 1898-1918.
