William B. Ballou was born in Winter Hill, Vermont. He arrived traveled to Alaska from San Francisco by schooner, disembarking at Rampart City to search in 1907. Ballou was apparently a part time accountant and he wrote "Jack - a true story of adventure in Alaska." He married and had a son.
