Samuel A. McWilliams was a civil engineer, who worked on the Milk River Project and other irrigation projects in Montana during the 1910s. Papers consist of his files concerning work on these projects. Collection consists of Samuel A. McWilliams' files concerning his work on various irrigation projects in Montana and Wyoming. There is correspondence (1910-1916) with the U. S. Reclamation Service; cost analyses (1915) of the Milk River Project's Dodson Canal; and an engineer's notebook primarily consisting of technical information. The bulk of the collection consists of proposals, specifications, and drawings for the Huntley Project (1911); for the Flathead Project's Pablo Dam (1911); for the Milk River Project (1914-1916) including the Bowdoin Canal, Dodson Canal, Nelson Reservoir, St. Mary Storage Unit, and Vandalia Dam and Canal; and for the Sun River Project (1930) enlargement of Pishkun Reservoir. There is also a short article entitled "Factors which influence profits in farming." Outgoing correspondence consists of letters McWilliams wrote in search of employment as a civil engineer. The Milk River Irrigation Project was established to create irrigation access to farm lands of Central and Eastern Montana. The project involved the construction of Sherburne Dam, near Glacier National Park, and a series of other dams and viaducts to collect and divert the waters of the St. Mary River east to the north fork of the Milk River. Samuel A. McWilliams was born in Kansas on March 2, 1886, the son of Fletcher and Mary (Garrett) McWilliams. He grew up on his parents' farm in Washington County, Kansas. In 1911 he came to Montana to work on the Flathead and Huntley irrigation projects. He remained in Montana and worked on the Milk River Project from 1914 to 1916. By 1930 he was living in Los Angeles, California, and was married to Ivah, and had a twin son and daughter, Gordon and Mary. He died in Los Angeles on January 30, 196...
