The Milk River Irrigation Project was established to create irrigation access to farm lands of Central and Eastern Montana. The project involved the construction of Sherburne Dam, near Glacier National Park, and a series of other dams and viaducts to collect and divert the waters of the St. Mary River east to the north fork of the Milk River. The project was authorized in 1903 and construction began in 1906, with its major completion in 1946.
