Heroines graphics collection, 1795-1907.

This portion of the collection contains engravings depicting heroines and heroic acts by women including various images of Joan of Arc (by Paul Delaroche, H. Scheffer, John Chester Buttre, John Opie, and others), Boadicea haranguing the Britons (1795), Nancy Hart a heroine of the Revolution (1853, drawn by Darley, engraved by Fitz Edwin Jones), and Mrs. Schuyler firing her corn fields on the approach of the British (1874, painted by Emanuel Leutze). Also, articles and images of Anna Warner Bailey, heroine of Groton, Conn. during the American Revolution; Ida Lewis rescuing drowning people in Newport, R.I.; Betsy Ross's flag making; Kate Shelley saving people during an Iowa flood; Mrs. Frank St. Clair Grimwood tending injured in India; Grace Darling performing a sea rescue; and unnamed women performing heroic acts (saving a man hanging from a building scaffolding, horse accidents, fire rescues).

Boadicea was a queen of the British Iceni tribe who led an uprising against the conquering forces of the Roman Empire in 60 or 61 CE. According to Roman sources, shortly after the uprising failed, she poisoned herself or died of her wounds, although there is no actual evidence of her fate. She is considered a British folk hero. Kate Shelley (also spelled Shelly) was born in Ireland about 1864 to Michael and Margaret (Dawn) Shelley. The family immigrated to the United States in 1865 and settled on a homestead on Honey Creek near Moingona, Boone County, Iowa. Michael Shelley found work on the Chicago and North-Western Railway, and was eventually made a foreman of a section crew. He died in 1878, leaving his wife Margaret to care for the family. Painter Emanuel Leutze was born in Germany and emigrated to America in his youth. He became well-known regionally for his painting, especially portraits, and returned to Germany to paint and study from 1841 through 1859.
