Painter Emanuel Leutze was born in Germany and emigrated to America in his youth. He became well-known regionally for his painting, especially portraits, and returned to Germany to paint and study from 1841 through 1859. He is remembered for historical, patriotic works, exemplified by his best known painting, Washington crossing the Delaware.

Born in Germany and moved to Pennsylvania as a child. Went back to study in Germany from 1840-1859. Most noted for his painting, "Washington Crossing the Delaware."
