Gail Curtis collection.

This collection consists of two series of materials of, or relating to Gail Curtis. The first series, correspondence (1923-1960) includes letters written by Curtis, as well as letters received by her, and correspondence of others regarding general library matters and activities of the Michigan Library Association. Also includes requests and thank-you letters written by library patrons. The second series, reports and policies (1921-1961) includes annual reports documenting Library of Michigan administration and usage. Includes a general inventory of books and choir music, policies of the the Library and resolutions passed by various library-related committees, documents relating to the fire of 1951, and a history of the library written by Curtis in 1959.

Gail Curtis was born on Nov. 24, 1887, in Napoleon, Mich. She attended Olivet College and the University of Michigan. She worked briefly as a teacher before attending a course on library science and becoming a cataloger at the University of Michigan library before transferring to the Library of Michigan in 1914. She became the head of the reference section in 1919. She was president of the Michigan Library Association from 1925-26. She retired from the library in 1957, after 43 years of service....
