Representative J. Harold Stevens papers.

This collection consists of various legislative materials of Rep. J. Harold Stevens and is arranged in two series. The first series, correspondence (1964-1968), covers a variety of constituent concerns and Stevens' response to them, and some letters that give an insight into his personal life. The bulk of the correspondence relates to the open housing issue. The second series, reports (1964-1968), contains of Stevens' newsletters, news releases, questionnaire results, and a copy of his 1968 tentative campaign budget.

Rep. J. Harold Stevens was born in Lansing, Mich. in 1895. He served as a 2nd lt. in the U.S. Army Reserves in World War I. He graduated from Hillsdale College in 1921 and became an athletic coach at Belding High School. He continued to teach in the Detroit school system until his retirement in 1961. He received his M.A. from the University of Michigan in 1924, and graduated cum laude from the Detroit College of Law in 1937. He was a delegate to the Michigan Constitutional Convention.
