Rep. J. Harold Stevens was born in Lansing, Mich. in 1895. He served as a 2nd lt. in the U.S. Army Reserves in World War I. He graduated from Hillsdale College in 1921 and became an athletic coach at Belding High School. He continued to teach in the Detroit school system until his retirement in 1961. He received his M.A. from the University of Michigan in 1924, and graduated cum laude from the Detroit College of Law in 1937. He was a delegate to the Michigan Constitutional Convention. He was elected to the State House in 1964, was re-elected in 1966, but did not seek re-election in 1968.
