Sikke Aldert papers, 1829-1855.

Chiefly personal and business documents; deed, 6 July 1829, Charleston, S.C., for half ownership of a schooner called "The Cora" obtained from Samuel Newbold; real estate deed, 8 May 1834, from James Cobias to Sikke Aldert, for "that lot of land... on the south side of Stolls Alley in the City of Charleston and known by the number (7) seven together with a two story tenement Brick House..." ; and 2 receipts, 22 Feb. 1832 and 5 May 1857, Charleston, S.C., signed Samuel Alexander of Charleston Marine Society. Certificate, Mar. 1839, presented to Ann L. Aldert, re school reward; temperance pledge, 15 July 1842, Charleston, S.C., re a renunciation of alcohol and Jos[eph] E. Aldert's membership in the Marine Washington Total Abstinence Society of Port of Charleston. Pilot's boarding book, 1854-1855, Charleston, S.C., used by Sikke Aldert, and his sons Joseph Eastburn Aldert, and Benjamin Sikke Aldert; record of crew activities while in harbor of Charleston, S.C., including name of ship, pilot name, number of staff, and income received; volume also includes drawing of a woman in a shield seated holding an orb and spear, dated 1797 (possibly a rendering of the "Dutch maiden of freedom" in use during the Batvian Republic) and typed copy of genealogical information on other members of the Aldert family, inscribed by Fred W. Dibble, great grandson of Captain Sikke Aldert.
