The Newberry was founded on July 1, 1887 and opened for business on September 6 of that year. The son of Col. Ephraim Williams (1691-1755), Elijah Williams was a Stockbridge and West Stockbridge, Mass., merchant, iron manufacturer, and proprietor of marble quarries.
