Collection consists of 3 items: (1) Set of letters by Cabell to Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings (1940-53) (typed originals & 1 set of copies) -- (2) A typed copy of a cumulative index to the Storisend Edition of Cabell's works (McBride, N.Y., 1927-30), which was prepared by John M. Campbell, Jr. of Paris, France, and includes a notation: "No other index exists, either in individual vols. or for the works as a whole" -- (3) Photocopy of a Ph. D. thesis "James Branch Cabell: a critical consideration of his reputation" (Univ. of Ill., 1954)

Richmond author James Branch Cabell (1879-1958) is best known for his controversial book, Jurgen (1919), a fantasy set in Cabell's mythical medieval world of Poictesme (pronounced Pwa-tem). The New York Society for the Suppression of Vice contended the book was obscene. A trial over its content brought the reclusive writer national fame.
