Mason was part of the Merril Horse unit, which formed in Battle Creek (Mich.) but was not accepted for use by the governor of Michigan. Instead, the unit later became part of Missouri 2nd Cavalry, Company H. Mason, from Calhoun County (Mich.), enlisted at the age of 18 in Aug. 1861. He was mustered in Sept. 1861.
