Phillips family papers II, 1769-1993.

Correspondence and papers of the Phillips family of Beverly and Boston, Mass. Includes a letter received by William Phillips from merchant Thomas Bromfield in England, 1769; election returns from the town of Beverly stating that Caleb Strong and William Phillips received the majority of votes for governor and lieutenant governor in 1812; a diary kept by Thomas Phillips describing daily social activities in Boston, 1818; letters received by John C. Phillips (1807-1878) from family members while working in Cuba and Philadelphia, 1828-58; and courtship letters written by John C. Phillips (1838-1885) to wife Annie Tucker Phillips, 1875-84, before and after their marriage. Collection also includes correspondence and speeches of diplomat William Phillips, including letters written from Peking (now Beijing), China to his family while serving as 2nd Secretary of Legation, 1905-06; a diary kept by William describing his work in China, 1907; correspondence with presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, Woodrow Wilson, and Franklin D. Roosevelt, 1918-57; correspondence regarding the Communist takeover of Shanghai, 1949-50; and letters received by William from graduate students researching American foreign policy, 1966. Also includes correspondence and writings of William's son, Christopher Phillips regarding William's political career, 1971-91; a transcript of an oral history conducted with Christopher Phillips discussing his father's and his own diplomatic careers, 1993; and a Phillips family genealogical chart.
