Petition prepared at "St Johns" on Jan. 1, 1839, by the governor, lieutenant governor, and councillors of the St. John's tribe, which for twenty years had been part of the Penobscot Indian confederation. The document, written by Indian agent John Wilkins and signed with the marks of the tribal officials, argues that John Attean and John Neptune, who had been elected Penobscot governor and lieutenant governor for life, should be retained in their offices.
