The Newberry was founded on July 1, 1887 and opened for business on September 6 of that year. Henry Hunt Snelling, pioneer in photographic journalism, was born at Plattsburg, N.Y. in 1816. Snelling spent his early childhood in army posts especially at Fort Snelling (Minn.) where his father, Josiah Snelling, served as commander.
