Allen Kent papers. 1952-1988.

The materials in this collection pertain to the writings of Allen Kent, unless otherwise noted. The collection is divided into two major series: materials pertaining to library studies, and more general files containing papers, reports and published articles by or about Allen Kent and his field of research. Series I contains records documenting and critiquing the creation of the study of the use of library materials at the University of Pittsburgh, which was conducted by Kent and others in 1976 and published in 1979. In addition, it contains materials pertaining to related library studies. It constitutes approximately one quarter of the collection, or 24 file folders. Series II holds general files containing papers, reports and published articles by or about Allen Kent and his areas of interest. It should be noted that some of the records in Series II are printed journal articles. The files date from 1952 to 1988.

Allen Kent (1921- ), one of the nation's pioneers in information retrieval, established, in 1963, a center dealing with teaching, technology and research related to knowledge availability systems at the University of Pittsburgh. Kent graduated from City College of New York with a B.S. in chemistry in 1942.
