Helen Hood scrapbook, 1882-1904.

The scrapbook contains Hood's concert and recital programs, newspaper clippings about her concerts, and concert programs featuring her musical compositions; letters from musicians; and Arthur P. Schmidt song catalogs containing listings of her works. Includes programs from a tour in Germany and flowers and ivy from the graves of Beethoven, Mendelssohn, and Schubert. She received letters from musicians complimenting her work and requesting songs, from lawyer Richard Henry Dana inviting her to join the New England Conservatory of Music visiting committee, from composer Moritz Moszkowski (and a mss. score), from Eugene Field giving permission to set his "A Cornish lullaby" to music, from Albert Becker, and from Helen Louise Thayer-Bryant. Includes her appointment notices to the advisory council of the Woman's Branch of the Auxiliary of the World's Columbian Exposition.

Eugene Field, an American writer, was born in 1850 to Rosewell Field and Frances Reed. After his mother's death in 1856, he and his brother were sent to live with a cousin in Amherst, Massachusetts. He studied at Williams College from 1868-69. He then studied for a short time at Knox College in Illinois and at the University of Missouri. He married Julia Sutherland Comstock on October 16, 1873.
