Chiefly family correspondence and business papers of captured Confederate officer Archibald E. Gilchrist during final year of Civil War, and efforts to secure his parole; local economics; community and religious activities; and family news relayed to relatives who had relocated to the lower South. Notebook, 1861, re furloughs and military activity at Pocataligo, S.C.; letter, 5 Jan. 1865, Mary L. Fisher, Washington, D.C., to Lt. Archibald E. Gilchrist, Fort Delaware, Del., acknowledging his letter forwarded from her home in Maine, noting Fisher's antebellum visit to Gilchrist's home, inquiring re family and friends in S.C., and offering to send newspapers; letter, 26 Jan. 1865, from Gilchrist's father, re Gilchrist's war activities and advising him of friends willing to send supplies. Letter, 19 May 1865, Mary L. Fisher to A.E. Gilchrist re her esteem for his family and efforts in Washington, D.C., to aid him; 3 letters, 17, 26, and 27 May 1865, from Robert Orr, Cincinnati, Ohio, re the capture of Jefferson Davis, sending money, and plans to contact his Congressman to hasten Gilchrist's parole. Also including autograph album, 1861, of D[avid] E. Gilchrist, presented to grand niece Jessie Gilchrist Ham, containing profession, motto, signature, and remarks of friends at Wofford College and Spartanburg Female College with notations re their experiences during the Civil War. Also including 8 letters, 1876-77, Clinton, S.C., from itinerant Methodist clergyman William Washington Jones, formerly minister of Mullins, S.C., re hardships, affection for the Gilchrist family, a recent camp meeting, expressing preference for style of worship services conducted by residents of the low country, and expectation of closure of Presbyterian Orphanage; religious text book, 1879, listing A.E. Gilchrist as Sunday-school instructor. Later correspondence of Augusta Bethea Gilchrist documents family connections with relatives in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana; document, 1902, agreement with Mullins Lumber & Brick Co. to furnish electricity; 2 insurance policies, 16 Jan. 1904 and 13 Jan. 1905, Marion County, S.C.; receipt for Sanitary Tax, 31 Mar. 1906, re payment to town of Mullins, S.C.; railway pass, 1925, issued by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad to Mr. And Mrs. J.I. Ham.
