J. Allen Gilbert (April 5, 1867- April 18, 1948) was a medical doctor who practiced in Portland, Oregon. He graduated from Oterbein University (Germany) in 1889. He married Florence Zerwekh in Dayton, Ohio and they had a daughter, Dorothea. Mrs. Gilbert died on December 19, 1917, which prompted Dr. Gilbert to undertake a worldwide search for her spirit.
