The collection contains primarily the writings of James Owen Tryon, a lawyer and author. Also included is correspondence to Tryon's literary editors, letters concerning the Coxsackie New York Central Schools District dispute, and correspondence pertaining to Tryon's work in the New York Supreme Court and as a Major in the Red Cross during World War I. Tryon's writings include poetry, nonfiction, fiction, and a play. The collection also includes two scrapbooks of photographs and clippings regarding the Central Schools issue.

James Owen Tryon was born September 16, 1879 in Athens, N.Y. After graduating from Williams College in 1900, Tryon attended New York Law School (LL. D. 1903) and practiced law in New York from 1903 to 1926. During World War I, he served as Field Director and Major for the American Red Cross and was in charge of the debarkation hospital on Staten Island. Tryon died November 7, 1952.
