Burnside was born in Liberty, Indiana and was the fourth of nine children of Edghill and Pamela (or Pamilia) Brown Burnside, a family of Scottish origin. His great-great-grandfather Robert Burnside (1725–1775) was born in Scotland and settled in the Province of South Carolina. His father was a native of South Carolina; he was a slave owner who freed his slaves when he relocated to Indiana. Hodskin, Charles Horace, 1837-1905.

Hodskin was born in Fairport (N.Y.) on Aug. 22, 1837. He moved to Battle Creek (Mich.) where he later married Marie Mason in 1864. They had two children. Hodskin served in the Michigan Infantry 2nd Regiment during the Civil War and was eventually honorably discharged with the rank of Captain in 1864. From 1881 until his death Hodskin lived in Manistee (Mich.) where he managed the affairs of the Boom Company. Hodskin died Feb. 18, 1905 in Manistee.
