Papers, 1787-1876.

Papers document family involvement in N.J. politics and history during the 19th century. Bulk of papers are Samuel Hayes Congar's correspondence and notes on local history and genealogy, compiled as New Jersey Historical Society Librarian. Of note: abstracts of Newark public records from the 17th and 18th centuries; election rolls from 1832 and 1839, which list voter names and political preferences; a volume of "Monumental Inscriptions of Newark's Earliest Settlers," which includes mortality lists, copies of church records and genealogical charts; and a series of letters from John Robertson Burnet regarding the Ball family genealogy. Other family names mentioned in genealogical notes include: Baldwin, Beach, Bruen, Burnet, Congar, Crane, Cumming, Dalglish, Dodd, Harrison, Morris, Peck, Parkhurst, Plume, Schenk, and Ward. Dr. Stephen Congar's papers include correspondence, medical certificates, medical school lecture tickets, receipts, and notes on the revision of the Newark Town Charter (1855). Also, an account book (1787-1812) belonging to Samuel Congar, a Newark weaver, and letters of William A. Whitehead and other correspondents.

Congar family of Newark, N.J. (Essex County). Stephen Congar (b. 1810), a physician and New Jersey state legislator (1852-1854), was the first president of the Newark Board of Education and, later, superintendent of Newark public schools. Samuel Hayes Congar (1796-1872), Librarian of the New Jersey Historical Society (1852-1872), was known for his expertise in Newark history and genealogy, as well as his efforts to preserve the old Burying Grounds in Newark.
