The bulk of the papers are manuscripts of Sterling's writings and his research notes. The major work is an untitled, unpublished biography of Joseph R. Brown, a Minnesota and Dakota pioneer, concentrating on his connection with Fort Wadsworth (Fort Sisseton) and the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux. Also included is a group of notes on ambulances in World War I.

Educator, historian. Sterling became a professor of history at the University of South Dakota in 1946, remaining there until his death. In 1953 he became the Assistant Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He annually wrote articles on South Dakota for encyclopedias and yearbooks such as World Book, Britannica, and Colliers.
