Sterling became a professor of history at the University of South Dakota in 1946, remaining there until his death. In 1953 he became the Assistant Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He annually wrote articles on South Dakota for encyclopedias and yearbooks such as World Book, Britannica, and Colliers.
