Typescript copies of a memorandum book and diary kept by Smith during his travels. The memorandum book, 1844, describes a trip to Washington, D.C. and details expenses and activities. Topics include visits to the U.S. Patent Office and negative opinions of speeches made in Congress. The diary describes an 1867-1868 trip to visit his sister in Texas, and details boat travel on the Mississippi and Red Rivers, expenses, and activities.

A native of South Carolina, Smith moved to Indiana in 1817 and settled in Winchester, Randolph County, where he began practicing law in 1837. Smith was a circuit judge, built the Franklin House Hotel, helped plan Union City, Ind., and wrote several works, including two histories of Randolph County.
