The Newberry was founded on July 1, 1887 and opened for business on September 6 of that year. The British publishing and bookselling firm of Cadell & Davies was established in 1793 as a joint partnership between Thomas Cadell (1773-1836) and William Davies (d. 1820). The pair inherited the business from Cadell's father, Thomas Cadell the elder (1742-1802), and carried on his legacy as a leader of the London book trade. Fur trader, explorer, and author. In 1801 Cadell & Davies published Mackenzie's account of his two expeditions to find a route to the Pacific ocean in 1789 and 1793 (Voyages from Montreal ... to the frozen and Pacific Oceans).
