Miscellaneous museum items, 1800s-1900s.

Museum items collected from various sources by the Southern Historical Collection, but not related to other SHC collections. Among them are a copy of the Great Seal of the Confederacy, a Medal of Honor from the United Daughters of the Confederacy, a wood fragment from the prow of the Merrimack, a death mask, and a pair of shackles reportedly used for slaves.

The Southern Cross of Honor award, which later became the Cross of Military Service, originated on Oct. 13, 1862 as an act of the Confederate Congress to recognize the courage and good conduct of officers, non-commissioned officers and privates of the Confederate army.
