Thomas Andrews Hendricks (September 7, 1819 – November 25, 1885) was an American politician and lawyer from Indiana who served as the 16th governor of Indiana from 1873 to 1877 and the 21st vice president of the United States from March to November 1885. Thompson was born in London, England and came to the U.S. at age 18. He studied medicine in Rush County, Ind. and Cincinnati, Ohio, and practiced in Rush County and Harrison, Ohio. During the Civil War he served as a surgeon with the 4th U.S. Colored Artillery and was medical director of Western Kentucky.
