Photocopies of letters, mostly letters from Henry H. Baker to his mother and fiance "Lollie" (later his wife). Included is a letter (1861 April 19) from Henry Baker at Charleston (S.C.) about his regiment's deployment to Morris Island (S.C.) and the bombardment of Fort Sumter; a letter (1862 June 23) from Barnard Baker to his mother concerning his brother Henry, taxes, an English steamship which ran the blockade at Charleston (S.C.) with cargo including 1000 barrels of gunpowder, family slaves, and other matters; a letter (1864 Dec. 13) from Henry Baker to "Lollie" concerning his train trip to Richmond (Va.) and a lost ring; and letters (1865) from Henry Baker at Sugar Loaf [N.C.?], mainly about the fall of Fort Fisher.

Charleston, S.C. merchant and soldier. Baker served as an officer (captain) of Company A of the 27th South Carolina Infantry Regiment, part of Hagood's Brigade. He was the son of Barnard Elliott Baker (d. 1850) and Susan Wilson Drayton (d. 1866). Henry Hyrne Baker married Laura Virginia Reynolds in February 1862. From the description of Letters, 1861-1865.
