George Fitzpatrick collection, 1928-1982.

Summary: Collection consists of the papers of George Fitzpatrick as director of the New Mexico Magazine(1928-1982). Included are correspondence (1928-1982), manuscripts (originals and copies), New Mexico Magazine papers, political papers, papers from various civic organizations, and miscellaneous documents and notes. The bulk of the collection consists of draft manuscripts and articles that discuss various New Mexico subjects. Some of the subjects discussed are New Mexico Governor Clyde Tingley, Carl Wickman and the mysterious death of his wife Donalda, and New Mexico history and outlaws. Correspondence consists of professional and personal correspondence to various persons. Political papers pertain to the activities of New Mexico Governor John E. Miles. New Mexico Magazine papers contain a history of the Magazine, a memo regarding an article on Smokey the Bear, and documents pertaining to the Magazine's acquisition of thirty Edward Weston photographs. Also included are minutes and laws of the Civil War Centennial Commission, a copy of a member list from the Statehood Commemoration Commission, a blank award of merit from the Keep Santa Fe Beautiful campaign, and miscellaneous documents and notes.

John E. Miles was elected Governor of New Mexico in 1938 and was re-elected in 1940. He was born in Tennessee in 1885 and moved to New Mexico in 1906.
