George Fitzpatrick was the editor of the New Mexico Magazine from 1935 to 1967.

Born in Erie, Penn. on May 19, 1904, George Michael "Fitz" Fitzpatrick chose a career in journalism. Fitz moved to New Mexico and was the captiol correspondent for the New Mexico State Tribune, 1927-1935. In January 1935, he moved to Santa Fe to take over the editorship of New Mexico, a joint publication of the New Mexico Game Department's Conservationtist and The Highway Journal, now called New Mexico Magazine. Under Fitzpatrick's thirty-four year leadership, circulation rose from 5,000 in 1935 to almost 50,000 when he retired in 1969. Fitzpatrick died February 24, 1983.

Born in Erie, Pennsylvania on May 19, 1904, George Michael "Fitz Fitzpatrick chose a career in journalism. He was a reporter for the Erie Dispatch-Herald, 1924-1926. Fitz then moved to New Mexico and was the capital correspondent for the New Mexico State Tribune, 1927-1935. He originated the column, "Off the Beaten Path. In January 1935, he moved to Santa Fe to take over the editorship of New Mexico, a joint publication of the New Mexico Game Departments Conservationist and The Highway Journal. When he assumed the editorship, the subscriptions were mostly complimentary copies. Under Fitzpatricks thirty-four year leadership, circulation rose from 5,000 in 1935 to almost 50,000 when he retired in 1969. Fitz introduced color pictures, increased advertising, and lured well known writers, artists, and photographers to submit articles and photos for very little monetary compensation. Along the way, the name evolved to New Mexico Magazine, and earned ranking along with Arizona Highways in vivid representations of the historical, cultural, and social life of the Southwest. Fitzpatrick died February 24, 1983.
