The Newberry was founded on July 1, 1887 and opened for business on September 6 of that year. Levi Frisbie, clergyman, was born in Branford, Conn. in 1748. Frisbie was one of four students in the first graduating class (1771) of Dartmouth College. After studying divinity under President Eleazar Wheelock, he was ordained in 1772 and began work as a missionary among the Indians.
