John Fowler papers : deeds and photostats, 1803-1818.

This collection consists of three items. The first item is a letter to voters written by John Fowler at the end of his term in office. It is dated Feb. 28, 1803. The document describes the state of the Union, and Fowler's accomplishments. This was mailed to James Taylor. Part of the seal is still affixed. The second item is a photostat of a letter to voters from Fowler, written in 1805. The original is a part of the Draper Collection. The third item is a land indenture, dated Feb. 9, 1818. John Fowler sold a tract of land in Fayette County, Kentucky, to Edward B. Wood. The survey measurements are described in the indenture.

John Fowler was born in Chesterfield County, Virginia, in 1756. He fought in the Revolutionary War, earning the rank of Captain, before obtaining his education at William and Mary. He migrated to Lexington, Kentucky, in 1783. Fowler became one of the trustees for the new city of Frankfort in 1786. In June of 1787, he joined James Brown's company to fight Indians. James Taylor, the son of Col. James Taylor, was born on Apr. 19, 1769 in Caroline County, Virginia. He was educated at Rappahannock Academy. In 1788 Taylor was commissioned as surveyor of Caroline County and was made deputy sheriff. He moved to Kentucky in 1792 and settled on the forks between the Licking and Ohio Rivers, founding the town of Newport. He made a fortune in Kentucky land transactions.
