Rembert C. Dennis papers, 1938-1992.

Papers arranged in six series: General, Speeches, Topical Files, Audio- Visual, Clippings, and Scrapbook material. General Files, 1973-1992, include personal and public correspondence and press releases. Of particular interest is Dennis' 1978 hand written memorandum, "Legislative Priorities and Pending Legislation for the Coming Session." Material from 1984 includes letters to Dennis on his selection as President Pro Tempore and a copy of his acceptance speech before the S.C. Senate. Papers for 1988 document his decision not to seek reelection. Speeches, 1954-1988, include drafts and related correspondence as well as the finished speeches. Topical Files include notes and interview questions of Dale Rosengarten used in her extensive oral history with Dennis, and the edited and verbatim transcripts of that interview, as well as interviews conducted for the "[Robert E.] McNair Project"; financial records; and materials documenting 1981 dedication of the Rembert C. Dennis Building adjacent to the S.C. State House. Audiovisual materials include 20 audio cassette tapes recorded by Rosengarten; and photographs [contact S.C. Political Collections for details]; also including Clippings, 1951-1995; unbound volumes, "Scrapbook material," 1938-1981, includes information (1938-1939, 1942-1961, 1963-1965) dating to Dennis' early years in the S.C. General Assembly, and the World War II and post-war eras; and bound scrapbook, 1982-Jan. 1987.
