Papers consist of correspondence and other items. Correspondence includes Vanderhorst's correspondence with Edwin G. Seibels (Columbia, S.C.), J.P. Stevens Engraving Co. (Atlanta, Ga.), brother-in-law Dr. William Weston (Columbia, S.C.), and others concerning stock purchases and other financial affairs, printing of letterheads, and other matters. Included is a carbon copy of a letter (1917) from Vanderhorst to President Woodrow Wilson regarding mandatory military training for American men of eligible age. Additional correspondence concerns legal and financial disputes involving Vanderhorst, including letters (1916-1919) from the law firm of Mordecai & Gadsden & Rutledge (Charleston, S.C.) regarding a judgment against Vanderhorst in the case of the International Harvester Co. v. Arnoldus Vanderhorst et al. Family correspondence (1923-1936) chiefly consists of letters to Arnoldus Vanderhorst from his brother Elias Vanderhorst (b. 1869) concerning family matters, an estate controversy about the rental of a family pew at St. Michael's Church, the purchase of 28 Chapel Street in Charleston (S.C.), the proposed development and/or sale of Kiawah Island (S.C.), and the estate of Adele Allston Vanderhorst (d. 1915). Included is a copy of a letter (1928) to Henry W.Conner (brother-in-law of Arnoldus and Elias Vanderhorst) concerning estate matters and the sale of Kiawah Island. Other items include annual statements of the South Carolina Insurance Company; letters and affidavits (1917-1918) concerning the registration of Wilbur Smith for military service; pamphlets; and a list of wedding guests (1940).
