Born in New Orleans, son of Rene Auguste and Marie Theresa Bourgeois Chouteau, baptized, Sept. 7, 1749. In 1763 went with his stepfather Pierre Laclede to select a site for a new settlement which was named St. Louis. Built up a large fur trade business and held various government posts when the territory was ceded to the U.S. Became the wealthiest citizen and largest landholder in St. Louis.
