This collection contains material Harvey M. Smith collected over his life, such as Confederate Naval Records, Confederate Bonds, early slave documents, sheet music and newspaper clippings. In addition to his collected material, he also donated his personal papers which contain correspondence, invitations, financial records, personal papers, newspaper and magazine clippings, and a rough copy of Smith's memoirs. Smith was involved with many personal research projects (i.e. textile history project, unfinished book about potpourri) and his notes and findings are included in this collection. Material relating to Smith's parents and their family history research in preserved here. This collection is divided into three series: Series I, Published and Printed Materials - Includes speeches, sheet music, an almanac, newspapers, newspaper clippings, political pamphlets and other documents (1703-1941); Series II, Civil War - Includes naval records maintained by Captain Richard Taylor, paymaster, Confederate States Navy, and Confederate States of America bonds; and Series III, Personal Papers - Includes invitations, financial papers, genealogy and correspondence.

Margaret Mitchell (b. November 8, 1900, Atlanta, Georgia-d. August 16, 1949, Atlanta, Georgia), the daughter of Eugene M. Mitchell, was a prominent attorney. Her mother, Maybelle Stephens Mitchell, was active in the women's suffrage movement. Harvey Smith, Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1906 to Harvey Smith and Minnie Robertson. He attended Boys' High School, Emory University and Oglethorpe University, all of Atlanta, Georgia. In 1943 he joined the U.S. Marines and ended his duty in 1958. He later moved to New York City where he ran an interior design firm where his specialty was curtains and wallpaper.
